A wool material that has been boiled in water is commonly known as boiled wool. This shrunken wool has a tight texture that resembles felt in certain ways. Clothing made with boiled wool is surprisingly soft when done properly using premium wool. Boiled wool doesn't normally require any special cleaning or maintenance techniques compared to other varieties of wool. What's pilling and how to prevent it? When tiny beads develop on the surface of woolen items, it is called pilling. Natural wool products often have pilling, sometimes more noticeable than others. Pilling is quite normal and can be used as "evidence" that an item is truly made of natural wool. Piling is the result of friction, either on the woolen item itself or on other items of clothing. It will act like sandpaper and cause pilling if the other object has a structured surface. There is no way to totally avoid pilling. However, there is a technique to reduce it: A woolen item that is too dry is more prone to pill than one that is adequately damp. Wool dries out really rapidly. As a result, we advise giving your wool items a moisturizing "shower". For instance, on a foggy day, hang the wool garment outside. Or hang it in the bathroom when the room is still quite steamy from a hot shower. It should just take a few hours. Can I remove pilling? Yes, with a little practice, it is possible to remove pills effectively using just a shaving razor. Place the affected item on the table in front of you.
