Elliott Erwitt has a wonderful outlook on life. In this book, he focuses on the human hand and shows a lot of love, humor and humanity in the process. The variety includes a man kissing a woman's hand in Poland, an argument between an elderly couple in St. Tropez, people praying in Moscow, beautiful sunbathers in Rio, children playing in New Rochelle and travelers in Budapest. Most of the subjects aren't famous which is a strength. The book shows everyday scenes that could have happened anywhere. The book also includes some famous people including: Jacques Cousteau, John Updike, Richard Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev. This book is a joy and a smile. Erwitt has great vision and compassion. Many people would have walked right past these scenes without even seeing the potential to communicate by capturing touching and humorous images.If you are learning people photography, this very simple book shows the expressive nature of hands and how important they are to obtaining a great picture.Most people know that getting the right facial expressionis is vital, but don't realise the importance of hands.The book is mostly just photographs; not a lot of text -- but you'll understand completely after looking through the book.very good.Well, you've seen ten of his photos, and you've about seen them all.The usual top notch photographs by the author.Some photos take up 1.5 pages, so it's hard to open it all the way to see the entire photo.Great book from a great libraryBought as a gift for my daughter.近年は大型作品集の出版が相次いでいたアーウィット。一転してテーマも判型もコンパクトな本書には、この写真家の「飾らない、自然な眼差し」が詰まっている。収められた作品はおよそ100余点。すべてモノクロで、撮影年は1950年代から2000年代まで。初期の一部を除き、大半はライカ（またはそれに準ずる小型カメラ）でのスナップである。既発の写真集との重複はごく一部であり、作品の大半は本書が初出のようだ。ここ最近のアーウィットは「ひねりの利いたスナップの名手」と認識されることが多いようだが、マグナムの一員であることが示すように、彼の仕事は常にフォトジャーナリズムとともにあった。本書の作品群もおそらくは仕事の合間に撮り貯めたものだろう。撮影地はアーウィットの地元であるNYCをはじめ、中南米やヨーロッパ、旧ソ連そして極東にまで及ぶ。最初にページを捲った印象として、彼独特のウィットやユーモアはごく控えめと感じる。既出の作品に比べて「絶妙のシャッターチャンス」を感じさせるものも少なめで、特に初期作品群はオーソドックスな撮り方が目につく。同様のテーマを扱ったパリの写真家たち、例えばブレッソンやロニなどの作品と対比すれば、本書に収められた作品群は「意外なほど意外性が無い」ともいえる。だが一つひとつの写真をじっくりと眺めれば、アーウィットの視線が追い続けたものがおぼろげながらに見えて来る。それは凡庸な日常のなかにある希望であり、子供という未成熟な存在を通して眺める「未来」である。そのことを強く印象づけるのが、撮影するアーウィットの視線が、年を経るごとに若返っていること。齢を重ねるほどに写真家は童心を取り戻し、そして未来への想いはより強く写真に定着されていく。もしそうであるなら、''KIDS'' というタイトルは、被写体と撮影者に被せたダブルミーニングに違いない。そこにこの作家の、老練で純粋な企みがあるのだと思う。写真家のエリオット・アーウィットは福山雅治さんとコラボしたことでも有名ですよね。この本はユーモアがあるのに美しいんです！！買ってよかった！！
